Chicago Botanic Garden
As a research assistant at the Chicago Botanic Garden, I applied my film skills to create an on-location documentary that explored field research of a threatened plant species, the Pitcher’s Thistle. Three weeks of shooting and editing culminated in a 20-minute documentary that explores all facets of researching a threatened plant species, from fieldwork to insect taxidermy. The footage also contains video from infrared binocular cameras used to scout nighttime pollinators of the thistle. This experience not only honed my technical skills but also strengthened my ability to communicate complex scientific information through engaging commentary. As both a researcher and documentarian I gained experience on both sides of the camera preparing me for obstacles in communication and equipping me with the necessary skills to solve them.
With the research being accepted for my friend’s Master’s degree, I am currently helping them to get their work published in the Journal of Ecology and Evolution.
