STAGE Lab
Currently, I am working on a mixed-media animation project using archival images of our documentaries subject, Dr. Massey. This involves experimenting with techniques like moving photo collages, stop-motion, and speed ramps to creatively bring the past to life. This project allows me to explore new ways of telling stories through animation and visual effects, adding a unique layer to our documentary work.
As a Film Intern with STAGE since 2023, I play a key role in producing a science documentary for their Curiosity series. Collaborating closely with the Director of Science, I storyboard and plan shoots, write detailed outlines for the team, and create gear lists. At shoots, I film with Sony FX6 and FX3 cameras and record sound with lav, zoom, and boom mics into a MixPre. After shoots, I transfer footage to the team computers and synchronize sound and footage in sequences. I spend extensive time working in Adobe PremierePro editing footage to create scenes for the documentary.
Teaching undergrad and graduate students how to use all the technology from using cameras gimbals, the MixPre, and lights to editing, synchronizing, and storing footage in PremierPro, is an important part of my role as well. This teaching aspect of my role not only allows me to share my knowledge but also strengthens my own understanding of the technical side of filmmaking. We often work with the student body of the University, presenting and getting feedback on drafts of scenes. This experience was very constructive, giving me confidence and pride in my work, as well as refining my skills and learning what an audience notices and enjoys.
